"The News" Guide Awards 2010

I'm delighted to report that at "The News" Guide Awards 2010 ceremony at the Kings Theatre in Southsea last night, Steve Pitt was recognised for his achievements in music, theatre and the promotion of culture.

After collecting his award, Steve, who is the proprietor of The Cellars at Eastney said:

'I'd urge people at all levels of government not to make further cuts to culture and leisure budgets. Funds are already uncomfortably low. If culture is defined as the things in life we don't have to do, but want to, then if you cut that all that's left is what people must do, and if that's all that's left, you're in an Orwellian existence with no quality of life at all. People sometimes imagine culture is just about difficult-to-access art, or unusual sculpture, but it's all sorts of things, like live music, or the dance class people save to take their young daughter to at the weekend. It's also vital for people to remember culture brings in money. This city earns a massive amount each year from culture and tourism. In many ways, it's the only thing on which the city can reliably build its economic recovery,'

His comments come after "The Times" released figures which place Portsmouth second from the bottom in a table measuring culture in UK cities

Well said Steve - and my sincere congratulations on a well deserved accolade.

But "use it or lose it", as they say... as well as great gigs at The Cellars (which I've been proud to have been involved with from time to time), don't forget the free entry gigs at The R.M.A. Tavern in Eastney on Thursdays and Saturdays, the once a month gigs at The Bullfrog Blues Club, The Southsea Folk & Roots Festival, etc etc...

There is absolutely NO reason for Pompey to be 2nd from the bottom of a table measuring culture in UK cities.

The music is OUT THERE - get off yer arses and ENJOY - before it's too late....
