KELLY JOE PHELPS. & CORINNE WEST with special guest JACKIE LEVEN - Bullfrog Blues Club Southsea NEXT Thurs 7th Oct.

There's a rare treat for lovers of great guitar, blues and Americana when master guitarist KELLY JOE PHELPS, touring in a duo with CORINNE WEST, comes to Bullfrog Blues Club, South Parade Pier, Southsea, next Thursday, 7th October (Tickets for their Brighton show sold out weeks in advance!!!!)

And the icing on the top is that the excellent JACKIE LEVEN will be appearing too, performing the first part of the evening.

Kelly Joe Phelps played a superb gig at The Bullfrog Blues Club back in 2003, and The Isle of Wight Roots Festival in 2004, when we booked him to headline the Festival, and we're delighted to welcome him back, together with Corinne.

This top class duo will be performing Corinne's superb songs, many released on their "Magnetic Skyline'" CD, recorded live-off-the-floor at George Lucas' Skywalker Sound in California.

Kelly Joe grew up near Washington D.C., and b spent many years playing country, folk and jazz, before he discovered acoustic blues masters like Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Pete Williams. Initially gaining notice for his solo lapstyle slide guitar playing, he began writing songs in 1990 debut, "Lead Me On", followed by two more solo albums, "Roll Away The Stone" and "Shine Eyed Mr. Zen"

On his next release, "Sky Like A Broken Clock", he was joined by a bassist and a drummer, and on 2003's brilliant "Slingshot Professionals" (in the Barking Spider's top ten all time favourite albums) , he was joined by musicians on bass, drums, mandolin, violin and accordion . The solo live album "Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind" was followed by the studio album "Tunesmith Retrofit" with a band, and his latest, the solo "Western Bell".

Corinne’s music might get called “roots,” or “Americana”, but it doesn’t really fit in any genre box. It’s elegant new sexy acoustic jazz-rock-folk. It’s west coast acoustic-soul music- absolutely compelling both in the strength of her writing and the expressive power of her voice. When Corinne sings in concert, she doesn’t sound like anyone else. The strength of her songwriting, the power of her voice and her magnetic stage presence create a captivating performance, winning rave reviews at her home in the U.S.A. and abroad.

Tickets are just £10 - an absolute bargain, and not to be missed!!!!! (Tickets for their Brighton show have already SOLD OUT!!!!)

Other talk about Kelly Joe....

Steve Earle: "Kelly Joe Phelps plays, sings, and writes the blues. HOLD UP before you lock that in - forget about songs in a twelve bar three chord progression with a two line repeat and answer rhyme structure - though he can certainly do that when he wants to. I'm talking about a feeling, a smoky, lonesome, painful - yet somehow comforting groove that lets you know that you are not alone - even when you're blue. Play on brother."

Bill Frisell: "I first became aware of Kelly Joe Phelps when my daughter (who was 9 or 10 at the time) brought home a cd ('Lead Me On') from the Vancouver Folk Festival. "You might like this, Dad" she said. Boy, was she right. I've heard Kelly Joe mention that he's been inspired by people like Roscoe Holcomb, Robert Pete Williams, Dock Boggs, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and others. He seems to have absorbed all this (and all kinds of other stuff as well) and come back with something all his own."

Tim O'Brien: "When I heard Kelly Joe the first time, I was amazed how it all made so much sense. His music is a wide world with three hundred and sixty degrees of influence.... Kelly Joe is a musical slight of hand master. He pulls world wide sounds out of his guitar."
