Kelly Joe Phelps & Corrinne West

Kelly Joe Phelps grew up in Sumner, Washington, and began playing guitar at 12. He spent 10 years playing jazz, and refers to his "conversion" to a blues musician when he began listening to acoustic blues masters like Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Pete Williams.

Initially gaining notice for his solo lapstyle slide guitar playing, his 1995 debut, "Lead Me On" featured his own songs plus traditional numbers.
He followed this album with two more solo albums, and on "Sky Like A Broken Clock" was joined by a bassist and a drummer. On 2003's brilliant "Slingshot Professionals", Kelly Joe collected a wider collection of musicians to play guitar, bass, drums, mandolin, violin, and accordion.

In 2005, he released a live album "Tap The Red Cane Whirlwind" followed by the studio albums "Tunesmith Retrofit", and "Western Bell".

Corinne West's music doesn’t really fit in any genre box., but “roots,” “Americana”, and “progressive folk” spring to mind. It’s elegant new sexy acoustic jazz-rock-folk - west coast acoustic-soul music- absolutely compelling both in the strength of her writing and the expressive power of her voice. Corinne doesn’t sound like anyone else!

Other talk about Kelly Joe....

Steve Earle: "Kelly Joe Phelps plays, sings, and writes the blues. I'm talking about a feeling, a smoky, lonesome, painful - yet somehow comforting groove that lets you know that you are not alone - even when you're blue. Play on brother."

Bill Frisell: " I've heard Kelly Joe mention that he's been inspired by people like Roscoe Holcomb, Robert Pete Williams, Dock Boggs, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and others. He seems to have absorbed all this (and all kinds of other stuff as well) and come back with something all his own."

Tim O'Brien: "When I heard Kelly Joe the first time, I was amazed how it all made so much sense. His music is a wide world with three hundred and sixty degrees of influence.... Kelly Joe is a musical slight of hand master. He pulls world wide sounds out of his guitar."
