NEXT SUNDAY ( 26th - Bank Holiday ) - JULIE FELIX headlines Southse Folk Roots & Blues Day !

The legendary Julie Felix appears on Bank Holiday Sunday evening (26th August) at Southsea Folk Roots & Blues Day at The N.B.E.C.S.A. Club (a.k.a. The Dockyard Club), Onslow Rd., Southsea, PO5 2NH.
PO5 2NH.

Support is by the excellent P.J. Wright, of The Dylan Project, Little Johnny England, and also the Steve Gibbons Band.

Doors are at 8 p.m, but there is free music in the bar from 6 p.m

Julie Felix left California in the early 60's, and after living in Greece (performing with the then unknown Leonard Cohen) arrived in England in 1964. That same year she became the first solo folk artist to be signed to a major British record company (Decca)

In 1965 Julie headlined Croydon's Fairfield Hall, followed by the Royal Albert Hall, becoming the first British-based folk singer to fill London’s top venue, prompting ‘The Times’ to declare her “Britain's first lady of folk”

In 1966 Julie not only became the resident singer on the T.V show 'The Frost Report', but became the first "popular" singer to play at Westminster Abbey, on its 900th Anniversary.

In 1967 Beatles manager Brian Epstein booked Julie to top the bill on a two week engagement at London's Saville Theatre, with Georgie Fame and a newcomer named Cat Stevens.

Between 1968 and 1970 she had her own BBC TV series, and guests included Jimmy Page, Donovan, Dusty Springfield, Spike Milligan, Richard Harris and her old friend Leonard Cohen.

In 1970, she signed to Mickie Most’s RAK label, and produced RAK’s first hit with her version of Paul Simon's 'If Could '(El Condor Pasa)’. Her first L.P. on the label - “Clotho's Web” - included contributions from John Paul Jones, Danny Thompson and Cozy Powell.

In 1974 Julie signed with the E.M.I. label and toured Japan, Australia and New Zealand to promote the album “Lightning”. The title track of her 1976 album ‘Hot Chocolata’ was a number 1 single in Norway.

As a top interpreter of Bob Dylan’s music Remarkable Records release Julie’s double CD album of Dylan’s songs “Starry Eyed & Laughing” , recorded with superstar musicians including John Paul Jones, John Renbourn, Danny Thompson, Dave Swarbrick, Martin Carthy, Kiki Dee, and P.J Wright - who will be supporting Julie at the Southsea Folk Roots & Blues Day.

To continue the connection, Julie appeared at The Isle Of Wight Festival in 1969 on the same bill as Bob Dylan, who was performing his first full gig for three years, and afterwards not re-emerging to tour again until 1974. However, unlike Dylan, Julie returned to play the Festival in 2011 - her performance was every bit as dynamic as her appearance there 42 years earlier.

In June 2008 Julie celebrated her 70th birthday playing a sold out gig at Gateshead‘s Sage Theatre, snd the following year also Julie sold out the prestigious Cork Folk Festival, along with every other date on her Irish tour.
