BULLFROG BLUES- Thursday 2nd February Hard rockin' or acoustic? tTwo choices!

I’ve noticed that attendees for Barking Spider blues gig fall into two separate categories - those who prefer acoustic solo gigs....and those who prefer “in yer face” hard rockin’ blues.

So… as an experiment this month, on the next Bullfrog night - Thursday 2nd February, we’re going to run two gigs at two different venues - hard rockin’ blues from Tony Dowler’s Hellhounds at The N.B.E.S.C.A. Club (Dockyard Club), and a rare solo acoustic gig from San Francisco legend Banana from The Youngbloods (supported by Reet Petite and Gone) at The Cellars at Eastney

Tony Dowler’s Hellhounds have been described as the ultimate rock/blues power trio, with Tony Dowler (guitar/vocals), Dave Burns (bass guitar) and Steve Tansley (drums). If you liked Sinnerboy, you’ll like the Hellhounds - Steve and Dave are both ex members of the band!

But apart from Sinnerboy, over the years these extremely seasoned musicians have performed with the likes of Peter Green, Mick Hucknall (!), Budgie, Walter Trout and The Hamsters, and have played and headlined many festivals throughout the UK and Europe since the late 70's.

The band are concentrating on building a solid fan base by placing themselves in selected venues and festivals in the UK and throughout Europe., so if hard rockin’ blues is your thing, come along to the Bullfrog Blues Club at The N.B.E.S.C.A. Club (Dockyard Club), in Onslow Rd., Southsea. Tickets are £8 advance (buy on line through www.barkingspider.abelgratis.com) or can be purchased on the door. Doors open at 8 p.m.

However, if your tastes are more for acoustic blues, psychedelia and Americana, you can do no better than our gig at The Cellars at Eastney on the same night. We’re privileged to have Grandpa Banana - the original “hippie from Olema “ - founder member of the legendary San Francisco band The Youngbloods.

Grandpa Banana has just released a superb new album “Even Grandpas Get The Blues” which feature a host of all star guests, including none other than Ry Cooder, Barry “The Fish” Melton, and David Grisman, Jerry Garcia’s long time collaborator.

The Youngbloods’ classic recording “Get Together” cracked the U.S. top 5, sold over one million copies, and achieved gold record status in 1969.

After The Youngbloods folded in 1973, Banana became the accompanist to Mimi Farina (the sister of Joan Baez) for over twenty years, and also played keyboards and sang lead vocals with Zero for over 10 years, as well as playing with Norton Buffalo (Steve Miller band etc.), Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks, The Barry “The Fish” Melton Band and many, many others.

Our very own Reet Petite and Gone will be supporting Grandpa Banana keeping their San Francisco/West Coast credentials intact after supporting Woodstock legend Country Joe McDonald (of Country Joe & the Fish) on his entire 2001 U. K tour

Tickets are £9 advance, £10 on door. HOWEVER, there will be a £2 discount to anyone who says that they’ve been recommended by J.R of Barking Spider Promotions. Advance tickets can be reserved by ringing The Cellars on 023 9282 6249 most evenings, or e-mailing J.R on spiderpromos@aol.com.
