However, if your tastes are more for acoustic blues, psychedelia and Americana, you can do no better than our gig at The Cellars at Eastney on the same night. We’re privileged to have Grandpa Banana - the original “hippie from Olema “ - founder member of the legendary San Francisco band The Youngbloods. Grandpa Banana has just released a superb new album “Even Grandpas Get The Blues” which feature a host of all star guests, including none other than Ry Cooder, Barry “The Fish” Melton, and David Grisman, Jerry Garcia’s long time collaborator. The Youngbloods’ classic recording “Get Together” cracked the U.S. top 5, sold over one million copies, and achieved gold record status in 1969. After The Youngbloods folded in 1973, Banana became the accompanist to Mimi Farina (the sister of Joan Baez) for over twenty years, and also played keyboards and sang lead vocals with Zero for over 10 years, as well as playing with Norton Buffalo (Steve Miller band etc.), Dan Hicks and The Hot Licks, The Barry “The Fish” Melton Band and many, many others. Our very own Reet Petite and Gone will be supporting Grandpa Banana keeping their San Francisco/West Coast credentials intact after supporting Woodstock legend Country Joe McDonald (of Country Joe & the Fish) on his entire 2001 U. K tour Tickets for Grandpa Banana are £9 advance, £10 on door. HOWEVER, there will be a £2 discount to anyone who says that they’ve been recommended by J.R of Barking Spider Promotions. Advance tickets can be reserved by ringing The Cellars on 023 9282 6249 most evenings, or e-mailing J.R on spiderpromos@aol.com. spiderpromos@aol.com.
