LOWELL LEVINGER - Banana from The Youngbloods - is playing an intimate unamplified gig at the back room of the RMA Tavern, 58. Cromwell St., Eastney, Portsmouth, on Monday 12th May. The pub's open at 6 p.m, and the gig is in the back room - doors open at 8 p.m Banana, (real name Lowell Levinger) - the original "hippie from Olema" - is probably best known as a founder member of the legendary San Francisco Bay area folk rock band The Youngbloods. Their most famous recording, the classic "Get Together", cracked the U.S. top 5, sold over one million copies, and achieved gold record status in 1969. The Youngbloods disbanded in 1972, and Banana went on to a solo career, notably as accompanist for Joan Baez' sister Mimi Farina for many years. The Youngbloods reformed briefly between 1984 and 1985. These days apart from solo concerts, Banana gigs with his own band, with bassist Sam Page and David Thom on mandolin and guitar. Banana also plays blues on a regular basis with The Michael Barclay Blues Band, 60's psychedelic rock with The Barry "The Fish" Melton in The Barry Melton Band, and bluegrass music with The Papermill Creek Rounders, a band he formed in 2003 with David Nelson (The New Riders of the Purple Sage and Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band) and fiddle player Chad Manning of The David Grisman Bluegrass Experience. Banana also gigs with David Grisman, and Grisman's guitarist Artie Rose. He's also played with Norton Buffalo (from the Steve Miller band) and Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks This gig is NOT TO BE MISSED- tickets on the door, just £7..
